My minka is a typical tin-over-the-original-thatch, probably dome in the early 1960s, I would guess.

When we acquired it in 2016, the color of the roof was a combination dull gray-rust, so a couple years after that, we hired a roofing company to repaint and patch up the roof (couplings that had uncoupled, etc.).

It was a fascinating thing to see. It was basically three guys, about 60, 65, and 75 years old. The scaffolding wasn’t the modern stainless steel stuff, but old, paint-splattered wood beams they simply wired together with heavy-duty wire. Across the river, another minka was getting the same treatment, but these were much younger guys in their 20s using modern scaffolding, which I noticed presented some problems; too much of it was in direct contact with that minka’s roof, which must have made painting it much more difficult.

At one point, the younger crew came over to watch the seniors on my roof, all scurrying about like Spider-Man, despite their age, looking for advice.

On the very top of the roof, at each end, is an ornamental piece with, I think “水” (“water”) or something written on it. When that was repainted, the roofer had to position himself upside-down, yet did a perfect job!

Would be happy to pass on the company’s information for anyone interested….
